ABOUT ROTARY
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs.
MAY 1954 - 1958
The Rotary Club of Kitwe received its Charter at a presentation banquet on 17th May 1954, records of the early years are incomplete. In order to be able to make a worthwhile contribution to the Community the Club undertook a variety of fund raising projects. One of the first of these was the rotary Ball, which became an annual event despite the meagre 65 Pounds raised on the first occassion. This function, however, went from strength to strength and for many years became established as one of the social functions of the year.
In 1956 Rotarians Archdeacon Donald Weston and Bob Cotton took the initiative in requesting the establishment of a Young Men's Christian Association branch in Kitwe. They were able to obtain strong financial support from local mining-business concerns as well as receiving overseas support.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF KITWE 1979
It is my privilege and pleasure to convey a message of congratulations to the Rotary Club of Kitwe on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee Anniversary.
Since the Rotary Club of Kitwe received its charter on 14th May, 1954, it has carried out a number of important projects during the past 25 years. Some of these projects are :
(A) Service to St. Joseph's Mission School
(B) Airstrip and water projects at Lwela Mission
(C) Sponsorship of young Zambians to the Outward Bound School
(D) Obtaining of a foundation award for Mr. Bwalya, to study
(E) Donation of airfares to U.K. for sick people to receive medical treatment
The Rotary Club of Kitwe through the dedication of its Members and its motto "Service above self" has carried out some of the projects at a time when the country is experiencing severe economic difficulties, which is commendable.
I have no doubt that the reason for the successful completion of the projects lies in the dedicated work of the members, both past and present and in the support that has been given to the Club by various organisations in the city.
I therefore take this opportunity of congratulating the Rotary Club of -Kitwe on its past achievements and wish it more success in the future.
